Written in 1979, The Trap is based on the biography of one of the most important artists of the 20th century, Franz Kafka. For Różewicz, the artistic transformation of the Czech prose writer’s biography becomes the key to the historical and cultural heritage of the 20th century. The ambiguously understood “trap” in which the protagonist finds himself accurately reflects the spiritual and existential situation of a man striving to define his own identity.
My Trap is the story of Franz, a middle-aged writer who is trying to face the past and free himself from his father’s influence. Together with the protagonist, we wander through the labyrinth of his thoughts, fears, memories, and desires, looking for solutions to growing problems and for an escape from the troubling reality and from the images suggested by memory.
