Somewhere in a large European city there is a street. At first sight it is an ordinary street with ordinary inhabitants: Hans, a newsstand owner; Rudolf, a grocery store owner; Barbórka, the owner of a photo shop; young cashiers – all of them live their lives repeating their usual routines. One day a worker renovating a tram track finds a bricked-up old spoon, and at the same moment, imperceptibly for everyone, a young girl dies. The past meets the future, time is lost, and unusual and disturbing events take place on the street…
The Street was a theatrical performance presenting the result of a one-semester workshop at the Academy of Art and Culture in Warsaw. The main tasks of the participants in the workshop was to work on the role, to do space work, and to work with a partner. I used traditional as well as modern methods of working with an actor. Roland Schimmelpfennig’s drama, based on a collage, offered convenient possibilities for this.
