THE PROMISE, I. Rusek, POLISH RADIO

On August 31, 1939, Krysia returns with her parents from a wonderful holiday she spent with her grandparents in Grodno. The girl does not realize that history is about to enter her life to leave its mark on it.

Meanwhile, the protagonist and her school friend are playing in the yard, where two bullies, Franek and Kazik, want to hurt a homeless kitten. Krysia courageously defends the animal and promises them that she will walk over a dangerous high wall. This situation becomes the starting point for a conversation with her father about promises. The outbreak of the war causes a thread of sympathy and understanding to between Krysia and the boys. The children decide not only to look after the kitten together but also to wait for their fathers to return from the war.

It has been a very demanding but interesting experience to direct child actors. We tried to build convincing situations. Surprisingly, the most terrible moment for the children was the scene of bullying a cat.

The Promise  is a radio play for children,  written by Iwona Rusek and produced for the Polish Radio as part of the”Closer to History” series.
