“My wife hid in the wall unit because of poverty” – it’s how Pilarski begins his drama. The play diagnoses polish society 25 years after round tables talks and founding democratic government. We can easy understand that polish workers class lost everything because of politics and economics changes. Before 89′ they were glorified, because of political system but in fact also they were seeds and motor of Solidarność. In the new reality, after privatization, when a lot of factories bankrupted, workers landed on the street and in the age of 40 or more they had to change a profession and do a lot of humiliating temporary jobs. No one talks about this loudly but Bożena who has hidden in the wall unit represents all the Bożenas, whose standard of the life drastically went down after 1989.
In Poland there is a big group of people living at the edge of poverty, who are in a hopeless situation and getting frustrated and angry. Polish conservative government use this anger as political tool against liberal classes.
Author of the drama tries to connect most relevant present occurence with history of XX century. Holocaust and postmemory mechanism influences all social issues, which Poland has to face. The Jewish Cabaret (which I called Polish Monthy Python) comes from the past and is always present on the stage, claim that now we have safe time however maybe would like to hide. Another figure is Townhouse – who remember all its past residents – Jewish and Polish… – multicultural Poland before II WW.
Main characters take part in reality show – and it is another important topic – how media use people tragedies to earn money. Crazy Presenter directs reality show, but sometimes we think that he direct and change also past and present time.
